Introduction
In official UFO and UAP investigations, “unresolved” does not mean “confirmed extraordinary craft”. It usually means something much narrower and less dramatic: investigators do not have enough reliable information to identify the object with confidence. NASA and the US Department of Defense’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) have repeatedly stressed that poor-quality data, missing metadata, limited sensor coverage, and incomplete contextual information are the main reasons many reports remain open. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me… [2U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govDOPSR 2024 0263 AARO HISTORICAL RECORD REPORT VOLUME 1 2024U.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 18 Mar 2024 — • Although many UAP/UFO cases remain unsolved, based on the lack…
This distinction matters for AI-assisted UFO sighting investigation. A case file that lacks altitude estimates, precise timestamps, camera specifications, weather conditions, or corroborating observations may be impossible to classify accurately, even if the footage appears unusual. An unresolved label can therefore reflect uncertainty in the evidence rather than evidence of something exotic.
NASA’s public position has been notably cautious: the agency states there is no evidence that current UAP reports demonstrate extraterrestrial technology, while also acknowledging that some incidents cannot yet be fully explained with available data. Why low-information cases stay open
A surprising number of UFO reports become difficult to resolve for basic technical reasons rather than because they show impossible behaviour.
NASA’s independent UAP study identified several recurring problems that weaken analysis: [rev.com]rev.comRevUAP Independent Study Report from NASASo we are in such a data poor regime at the moment that we need to turn it into a data rich one…

These gaps create major analytical limits. A bright point in infrared footage may appear to accelerate suddenly, for example, but without accurate information about camera zoom, aircraft motion, sensor mode, viewing angle, and atmospheric conditions, apparent motion can easily be an illusion created by parallax, autofocus shifts, or tracking instability.
This is one reason AARO avoids treating unresolved cases as proof of anomalous technology. Official language often separates reports into categories such as:
- resolved [aliensarerunningoperations.com]aliensarerunningoperations.comUnresolved - Insufficient Data. Cases lacking adequate sensor data or corroboration. 33%. Anomalous - Unusual Characteristics. Cases demo…
- under analysis
- insufficient data
- unresolved [aliensarerunningoperations.com]aliensarerunningoperations.comUnresolved - Insufficient Data. Cases lacking adequate sensor data or corroboration. 33%. Anomalous - Unusual Characteristics. Cases demo…
Those distinctions are important because they prevent investigators from overstating what the evidence can actually support. [AARO]aaro.milAAROUAP ImageryAARO will continue to investigate this case should further information become available to enable a more conclusive attrib…
For AI-assisted investigation systems, this has direct design implications. A useful workflow should score not only the plausibility of explanations, but also the quality of the evidence itself. A dramatic-looking video with weak metadata may deserve lower analytical confidence than a mundane-looking report with strong multi-sensor corroboration.
A blurry case can stay unresolved forever
Many unresolved sightings share the same structural pattern:
- one witness or one sensor
- no radar confirmation
- no precise range estimate
- only a few seconds of footage
- compressed social-media uploads
- uncertain location or timestamp
- no original files available
In practical terms, this means there may never be enough information to determine whether the object was:
- a distant aircraft
- a drone
- a balloon
- a bird
- atmospheric glare
- a satellite flare
- a camera artefact
- something genuinely unusual
An unresolved outcome in these situations is often the most scientifically honest conclusion.
NASA’s study team described the current situation as “data poor”, arguing that better observations matter more than stronger speculation. [Rev]rev.comRevUAP Independent Study Report from NASASo we are in such a data poor regime at the moment that we need to turn it into a data rich one…
Why unresolved is not the same as anomalous
One of the most common public misunderstandings is the assumption that an unexplained sighting automatically becomes evidence for advanced non-human technology.
Official investigations do not work that way.
AARO’s historical review stated that although many UAP cases remain unsolved, investigators have not found verified evidence that any report demonstrates extraterrestrial technology. [U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govDOPSR 2024 0263 AARO HISTORICAL RECORD REPORT VOLUME 1 2024U.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 18 Mar 2024 — • Although many UAP/UFO cases remain unsolved, based on the lack…
That position reflects a basic evidential principle: failure to identify an object is not positive proof of an extraordinary explanation.
In scientific and intelligence analysis, there is an important difference between:
- “we do not currently know what this is”
- “this must therefore be advanced non-human technology”
The first statement reflects uncertainty. The second introduces a major claim that requires additional evidence.
This distinction becomes especially important in AI-assisted UFO workflows because automated systems can accidentally amplify ambiguity. Pattern-matching software may detect unusual motion signatures or similarities between cases, but that does not eliminate the possibility of incomplete measurements, environmental distortion, or ordinary misidentification.
A well-designed investigative pipeline therefore needs categories between “explained” and “extraordinary”, such as:
ClassificationMeaningRuled outEvidence strongly contradicts a proposed explanationPlausibleA conventional explanation fits reasonably wellWeakly explainedSome evidence supports an explanation, but gaps remainUnresolvedEvidence is insufficient for reliable attributionAnomalousStrong evidence appears inconsistent with known explanations
Without those middle categories, investigations can drift into false certainty.
“Interesting” does not equal “impossible”
Some official unresolved clips are retained not because they show impossible manoeuvres, but because investigators lack enough technical data to close the case conclusively.
AARO’s published imagery pages repeatedly note that some unresolved reports involve objects whose “morphological features, performance characteristics, and behaviors are unremarkable”, while still remaining unresolved because the available evidence is incomplete. [AARO]aaro.milAARO Mission BriefMany cases in AARO's holdings remain unresolved because of a lack of verifiable data. Cases lacking sufficient data to…
That wording is important. It shows that unresolved status can coexist with apparently ordinary characteristics.
In other words, an object may remain unidentified while still not displaying evidence of breakthrough propulsion, impossible acceleration, or exotic capabilities.
How classified data limits public analysis
Another reason unresolved UFO reports attract speculation is that the public rarely sees the full dataset.
Military and intelligence systems often collect information that cannot be released publicly because it would reveal:
- sensor capabilities
- radar performance
- infrared resolution
- tracking methods
- surveillance coverage
- operational locations
As a result, public audiences frequently evaluate only fragments of a much larger case file.
A short infrared clip released online may originally have been accompanied by classified radar tracks, telemetry, pilot communications, electronic intelligence, or contextual military data unavailable to outside analysts. In other situations, the opposite problem exists: the public clip may genuinely be all investigators have.
This asymmetry creates confusion. Observers outside government may assume withheld information contains dramatic confirmation, while official investigators may simply regard the case as incomplete.
NASA highlighted a related problem in its emphasis on transparent, standardised, scientifically usable data collection. The agency argued that future UAP work depends less on secrecy and more on calibrated, shareable observational systems. [NASA]nasa.govupdate nasa shares uap independent study report names directorNASAUPDATE: NASA Shares UAP Independent Study Report14 Sept 2023 — We found that NASA can help the whole-of-government UAP effort through…
Public clips often lose crucial metadata
By the time UFO footage spreads online, critical analytical details are often missing:
- original compression format
- frame timing
- GPS data
- camera orientation
- lens focal length
- device motion
- recording continuity
This matters enormously for AI-assisted analysis.
An automated system trying to estimate object speed from a social-media upload may produce wildly inaccurate results if the original frame timing or zoom information has been stripped away. Small metadata losses can create very large interpretation errors.
NASA repeatedly stressed that metadata and multiple measurements are often more valuable than visually dramatic footage alone. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…
Why cautious language matters in official reports
Official UFO investigations increasingly use restrained language because past public discussion often blurred the line between uncertainty and confirmation.
NASA’s UAP programme explicitly described a goal of moving discussion “from sensationalism to science”. [WIRED]wired.comThe agency stressed the need to shift the conversation from sensationalism to science and eliminate the stigma associated with reporting…
That shift affects how agencies frame unresolved cases. Terms such as:
- “insufficient data”
- “unable to determine”
- “pending analysis”
- “lack of actionable sensor data” [science.nasa.gov]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportAt present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple me…
may sound evasive to some audiences, but they are often attempts to communicate genuine evidential limits. [U.S. Department of War]media.defense.govDOPSR 2024 0263 AARO HISTORICAL RECORD REPORT VOLUME 1 2024U.S. Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 18 Mar 2024 — • Although many UAP/UFO cases remain unsolved, based on the lack…
This caution also protects investigations from a common analytical trap: forcing a conclusion before the evidence justifies one.
In intelligence work, premature certainty can distort future analysis. Once a case becomes publicly framed as “alien” or “definitely mundane”, later evidence may be interpreted selectively to support that narrative.
AI systems face similar risks. If training data labels unresolved sightings as inherently anomalous, automated classifiers may learn misleading patterns and overstate anomaly rates.
The better lesson is methodological, not sensational
The most important lesson from NASA and AARO is not that all UFO sightings are explained, nor that extraordinary craft have been confirmed. The deeper lesson is methodological: reliable conclusions require reliable data.
That has practical consequences for AI-assisted UFO sighting investigation.
A stronger investigative workflow prioritises:
- exact timestamps
- geolocation accuracy
- weather reconstruction
- astronomy checks
- aviation correlation
- satellite tracking
- sensor calibration [space.com]space.comnasa ufo uap study team first results revealedNASA UFO report finds no evidence of 'extraterrestrial…14 Sept 2023 — NASA UFO report finds no evidence of 'extraterrestrial origin' f…
- chain-of-custody preservation
- multi-angle observations
- confidence scoring tied to evidence quality
The aim is not to force every case into a neat answer. It is to distinguish between:
- ordinary objects identified confidently
- plausible but uncertain explanations
- low-information unresolved cases [aaro.mil]aaro.milAAROUAP ImageryAARO will continue to investigate this case should further information become available to enable a more conclusive attrib…
- genuinely difficult anomalies that remain unusual even after systematic screening
Official investigations increasingly treat unresolved status as a signal for caution, not proof of extraordinary technology. That distinction is central to any credible AI-assisted approach to UFO analysis.
