Introduction
Many UFO and UAP reports remain unresolved for a simple reason: investigators do not have enough reliable information to reach a defensible conclusion. That is very different from proving that something extraordinary occurred. In most unresolved cases, the problem is not that analysts discovered impossible flight behaviour or confirmed unknown technology. The problem is that the evidence is incomplete, contradictory, degraded, or impossible to verify after the event.
This distinction matters in AI-assisted UFO sighting investigation because automated systems often create pressure to produce clean outputs: a percentage score, a confidence estimate, or a ranked explanation list. But probability scoring only works properly when the underlying evidence is stable enough to compare against known outcomes. Many UFO cases fail that requirement from the beginning. A six-second infrared clip, a missing timestamp, uncertain witness direction, or absent radar data can make a case resistant to meaningful numerical scoring even when AI tools successfully identify patterns and candidate explanations. Missing evidence is often the real reason a case stays open
Public discussion sometimes treats “unresolved” as if it means “confirmed anomaly”. Investigators usually mean something narrower: the available evidence does not support a reliable determination either way.
That distinction appears repeatedly in official UAP material. This creates a major problem for probability scoring systems. A numerical estimate assumes that investigators understand the key variables well enough to model them. In many UFO reports, they do not.
Typical missing elements include:
- No reliable distance estimate
- Uncertain object size
- No independent witnesses

Each missing variable multiplies uncertainty. A light that appears to accelerate rapidly might actually be nearby camera motion, autofocus hunting, atmospheric distortion, or parallax against clouds. Without range information, velocity estimates can become almost meaningless.
AI systems can still assist by checking aviation traffic, satellite paths, astronomy data, drone restrictions, weather conditions, and historical similarities. But automation cannot reconstruct information that was never captured in the first place.
Why poor-quality data breaks probability estimates
Probability estimates are strongest when analysts can repeatedly compare similar events against known outcomes. That is difficult in UFO investigation because many sightings lack consistent observational structure.
A weather forecast works because meteorologists possess huge quantities of calibrated historical data. UFO cases rarely offer anything similar. Most are one-off events observed under uncontrolled conditions.

The core problem is not merely uncertainty. It is uncertainty that cannot be measured accurately.
Unknown distance creates cascading uncertainty
One of the most common failures in UFO analysis is missing distance information. Without distance, investigators cannot reliably calculate:
- Speed
- Acceleration
- Size
- Altitude
- Energy requirements
- Turning radius
A bright object crossing a phone screen could be:
- A distant aircraft
- A nearby insect
- A drone
- A satellite flare

The apparent motion may look dramatic while the underlying physical motion remains ordinary.

Sensor artefacts can imitate anomalous behaviour
Some unresolved UFO clips survive specifically because analysts cannot determine whether the unusual appearance comes from the object or the sensor itself.
Infrared systems are especially difficult for public interpretation. Heat bloom, display processing, glare, autofocus shifts, compression artefacts, and tracking software can all distort apparent motion or shape.

This matters for probability scoring because the uncertainty is structural rather than statistical. The system is not merely unsure which explanation is correct. It may not even know whether the observed feature is physically real.
Witness memory introduces unstable variables
Human observation is valuable, especially when multiple independent witnesses agree on core details. But witness recollections also evolve over time.
In UFO investigations, reports are often filed hours or days after the event. Memory reconstruction can alter estimates of duration, direction, colour, and movement. Excitement and surprise also distort time perception.
An AI model trained on historical reports may treat witness descriptions as stable data points even when they contain hidden ambiguity. That can produce misleadingly precise classifications.
For example:
- “Instant acceleration” may describe a light disappearing behind clouds
- “Silent hovering” may reflect distance misjudgement
- “Object split into two” may involve lens reflections or autofocus transitions
When witness statements conflict with environmental reconstruction, the probability model becomes fragile.
Unresolved does not mean equally mysterious
One major weakness in public UFO discussion is treating all unresolved reports as belonging to the same category. In reality, unresolved cases vary enormously in quality.
Some remain unresolved because they contain intriguing but incomplete data. Others remain unresolved because the evidence is too poor to analyse meaningfully.
That distinction is important for calibrated language.
A responsible investigation workflow may separate cases into categories such as:

Without that separation, unresolved counts become misleading. A blurry distant light and a multi-sensor military incident may both end up labelled “unresolved”, even though their evidential value differs dramatically.

Why AI systems are vulnerable to false confidence
AI-assisted investigation systems can compare cases rapidly and surface useful correlations that human analysts might miss. They can:
- Cross-reference air traffic databases
- Match star and planet positions
- Check satellite catalogues
- Compare movement patterns against drones or balloons
- Identify recurring witness-description clusters
- Detect timeline inconsistencies
- Flag likely hoaxes or edited footage
Those are valuable investigative tools. But unresolved cases expose a fundamental weakness in probabilistic AI systems: models often produce numerical outputs even when the input quality does not justify precision.
A machine-learning system may still output:

- 10% unknown
Yet those figures may rest on unstable assumptions:
- The timestamp could be wrong
- The camera orientation may be inferred incorrectly
- Wind conditions might be unavailable
- Range estimates may be speculative

In UFO analysis, this risk is amplified because many historical cases never received definitive ground-truth resolution.
An AI model trained on uncertain labels inherits those uncertainties.
Why calibrated language is often more honest than percentages
Because unresolved UFO cases contain layered uncertainty, many investigators prefer calibrated verbal assessments over exact percentages.
Phrases such as:
- “Consistent with aircraft behaviour”
- “Insufficient evidence for reliable attribution”
- “Likely atmospheric effect”
- “No evidence supporting extraordinary capability”
- “Unable to exclude conventional explanations”
may sound less scientific than “91% likely aircraft”. In reality, they often communicate uncertainty more accurately.
Calibrated language works better in unresolved cases because it preserves the distinction between:
- Missing evidence
- Weak evidence
- Contradictory evidence
- Partially explained evidence
- Truly anomalous evidence
That distinction matters for public interpretation.
A report that says “insufficient data for reliable assessment” tells readers something important about the quality of the case file itself. A percentage score can obscure that by implying a level of precision the investigation never possessed.
The strongest UFO investigations reduce uncertainty before scoring
Modern AI-assisted workflows are most useful when they focus first on evidence quality rather than immediate classification.
A strong investigative pipeline usually attempts to narrow uncertainty before assigning confidence levels. That often includes:
- Reconstructing exact timelines
- Verifying location and viewing direction
- Recovering original media files
- Checking weather and visibility conditions
- Comparing astronomical objects at that time and angle
- Reviewing aviation and satellite traffic

In many unresolved cases, the process stops early because too many critical variables remain unknown. The case is not necessarily extraordinary. It is simply underdetermined.
That is why unresolved UFO reports resist clean numerical odds. The investigation often lacks the stable foundation required for defensible probability estimates in the first place.
