Introduction

Triangle-shaped “UFOs” filmed at night often look persuasive because the geometry appears too precise to be random blur. In many cases, however, the triangle is not the object in the sky at all. It is the shape of the camera’s own aperture being projected onto an out-of-focus light source. When autofocus struggles in darkness, distant aircraft lights, stars or planets can turn into glowing pyramids, diamonds or polygons that appear structured and artificial.

Focus Blur illustration 1 This matters in AI-assisted UFO sighting investigation because modern case analysis increasingly depends on smartphone clips, zoomed digital footage and automated image review. If investigators do not first determine whether a camera was out of focus, both humans and AI systems can mistake a common optical artefact for a structured craft. NASA’s UAP study warned that poor sensor calibration and missing metadata already hamper reliable analysis of unusual aerial reports. How autofocus hunts in low light

Autofocus systems work by searching for contrast. In daylight, edges and textures give the camera plenty of information. At night, a distant light may be the only bright feature in the frame. The camera repeatedly shifts focus back and forth trying to find a sharp edge that may not exist.

When focus fails, a point light source no longer appears as a point. Instead, it expands into what photographers call a “circle of confusion” or bokeh pattern. Crucially, that blur often takes on the shape of the lens aperture itself. If the aperture opening is triangular, hexagonal or pentagonal, the blurred light can inherit that same geometry. [Luminous Landscape]luminous-landscape.comLuminous LandscapebokehFor a triangular aperture we no longer see a circle of confusion, but rather a triangle of confusion. Figure 2 ill… [Wikipedia]WikipediaBokehIn photography, bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in out-of-focus parts of an image, whether foreground or back…

This effect becomes stronger under several common UFO-report conditions:

  • Small bright lights against dark skies
  • Smartphones with aggressive low-light processing
  • Handheld filming from moving vehicles or ships
  • Autofocus continuously searching during recording

To a witness reviewing the footage later, the result can resemble a luminous structured craft rather than a blurred aircraft light.

The problem is amplified by expectation. Once a viewer believes the shape itself is the object, every wobble or focus adjustment may be interpreted as manoeuvring behaviour. In reality, the geometry may be changing because the lens is changing focus distance.

Why triangles appear instead of circles

Many people assume out-of-focus lights should always become soft circular blobs. That is only true when the aperture is close to circular. Real lenses often use multiple aperture blades that form polygons. A triangular opening produces triangular blur. A five-blade aperture can create pentagonal highlights. Photographers deliberately exploit this in artistic “custom bokeh” photography by placing shaped masks over lenses so that every blurred light becomes a heart, star or triangle. [Digital Camera World]digitalcameraworld.comBokeh, aesthetically pleasing out-of-focus light points, take on the shape of the camera’s aperture—thus, by creating DIY templates, phot…

That same principle can unintentionally create “pyramid UFOs”.

The geometry can look especially convincing because:

  • The shape stays consistent across multiple lights
  • Bright points appear solid rather than fuzzy
  • Slight camera shake makes the object seem dynamic
  • Digital sharpening can harden the edges
  • Compression artefacts may create apparent surface detail

In heavily compressed social-media clips, these artefacts can survive long after the original optical information has been lost.

The pyramid UFO footage controversy

One of the best-known modern examples involved night-vision footage recorded by US Navy personnel aboard the USS Russell in 2019. The released clips appeared to show glowing pyramid-shaped objects hovering over naval vessels. The footage quickly spread online as possible evidence of advanced craft. [2FOX 11 Los Angeles]foxla.comRELATED: Pyramid-shaped UFOs…Read more…

Sceptical investigators and imaging analysts argued that the pyramids were consistent with out-of-focus aircraft lights viewed through a triangular aperture system. Mick West and other analysts demonstrated that similar shapes could be recreated by deliberately defocusing bright lights while filming through matching optical geometry. [Wikipedia]WikipediaPentagon UFO videosPentagon UFO videos

Importantly, the debate was not simply “real UFO versus hoax”. The more precise technical question was narrower:

  • Were the triangular shapes properties of the objects?
  • Or were they properties of the imaging system?

That distinction is critical in responsible UAP analysis. A conclusion that the triangle shape is an optical artefact does not automatically identify the underlying object. The source could still have been an aircraft, drone or another unresolved target. What changes is the evidential claim. The footage no longer demonstrates a physically triangular craft.

This is exactly the type of claim reduction that AI-assisted investigation workflows should perform early in the analysis process.

Testing whether the shape comes from optics

Investigators can often test the autofocus explanation directly instead of arguing abstractly about what the witness “really saw”.

Compare multiple lights in the frame

If several lights share the same triangular shape and orientation, the geometry probably comes from the lens rather than from multiple independently triangular objects.

Aircraft navigation lights, stars and streetlights often all become identical polygons when badly out of focus.

Watch for focus transitions

In many clips, the object changes shape as autofocus hunts. A triangle may briefly collapse into a circular blur or sharpen into a conventional light before expanding again.

That behaviour strongly suggests an optical origin.

Recreate the effect experimentally

One of the strongest investigative methods is controlled recreation. Investigators can:

  1. Use the same phone or camera model
  2. Film distant aircraft or stars at night
  3. Force incorrect focus
  4. Match zoom level and exposure settings
  5. Compare resulting geometry with the original footage

If the same pyramid effect appears under controlled conditions, the case for an autofocus artefact becomes much stronger.

Examine metadata and exposure behaviour

Modern smartphones continuously adjust:

  • ISO sensitivity
  • Focus distance
  • Digital sharpening
  • Noise reduction
  • Exposure compensation

Without original metadata, investigators may only see the processed final image rather than the true optical behaviour. NASA’s UAP review repeatedly stressed that missing metadata weakens reliable interpretation of unusual footage. Why smartphones are especially vulnerable

Older UFO photographs often involved film cameras or dedicated optics. Modern reports increasingly come from phones designed to produce attractive consumer images rather than scientifically stable measurements.

Smartphone cameras combine:

  • Tiny sensors
  • Computational sharpening
  • AI-based noise reduction
  • Aggressive exposure balancing
  • Multi-frame image stacking
  • Continuous autofocus correction

These systems are excellent for everyday photography but problematic for distant night lights. The phone may invent edge detail or stabilise shapes in ways that make a blurred object look more structured than it really was.

Some newer AI photography systems can also hallucinate detail during enhancement. A low-information blob may emerge from processing with apparently crisp geometry that never existed in the original sensor data.

For UFO investigation workflows, this means the original file matters enormously. Screen recordings, reposted clips and compressed uploads can destroy the evidence needed to identify autofocus artefacts.

How AI systems can misclassify triangle artefacts

Machine-learning systems trained on visual anomalies can accidentally learn the wrong lesson from blurred footage.

If a training set contains many labelled “triangle UFO” examples without accounting for optics, the model may begin detecting aperture artefacts rather than unusual aerial vehicles. Research into computer vision and bokeh effects has shown that out-of-focus rendering can significantly affect recognition systems. [arXiv]arxiv.orgarXivNatural & Adversarial Bokeh Rendering via Circle-of-Confusion Predictive NetworkNovember 25, 2021…Published: November 25, 2021

A robust AI-assisted UFO workflow should therefore include optical screening stages before anomaly scoring. Useful automated checks include:

  • Detecting repeated polygonal blur patterns
  • Measuring focus instability frame by frame
  • Comparing object shape against aperture geometry
  • Checking whether all bright points share identical structure
  • Identifying digital sharpening halos
  • Estimating likely defocus levels from blur size

In practice, this means the system first asks: “Could the camera have created this shape?” before escalating the clip as genuinely anomalous.

What remains unresolved after the optics explanation

Autofocus and aperture effects explain many triangle-shaped UFO images, but not every unusual aerial report. Some sightings include corroborating radar, multiple witnesses, independent sensors or prolonged observation under conditions where defocus alone cannot explain the entire event.

That is why disciplined investigation separates layers of the claim rather than declaring total victory for either believers or sceptics.

For example:

  • “The object was triangular” may be unsupported.
  • “There was a real light source present” may still be true.
  • “The witness observed something unusual” may remain unresolved.

This layered approach is more useful than binary thinking because it preserves uncertainty honestly while removing unsupported visual claims.

In AI-assisted UFO investigation, autofocus artefacts are therefore not merely photography trivia. They are one of the most important early filters separating genuine unknowns from camera-generated illusions.
