Introduction
A UFO photo or video is not automatically strong evidence. In many cases, the most important information is not the glowing object in the frame but the technical details attached to the file itself. A short clip may show that something unusual appeared in the sky, yet still fail to prove its size, speed, distance or behaviour. Equally, a technically dull-looking file with intact metadata can become far more useful than a dramatic reposted clip with no provenance.

Original files versus screenshots and reposts
The strongest UFO media evidence is usually the least altered version available. An original camera file preserves technical context that disappears quickly once material is uploaded to social media, cropped, edited or screen-recorded.
A common failure pattern in public UFO cases looks like this:
- Witness records an event on a phone.
- The original file stays on the device.
- A compressed copy is uploaded to TikTok, X, Instagram or Reddit.
- Other users repost screen recordings or screenshots.
- The internet debates a fourth-generation copy with most metadata removed.
By that stage, investigators may no longer know:
- The exact recording time
- Whether the phone clock was correct
- The original resolution or frame rate
- Whether digital zoom was used
- If stabilisation or AI enhancement was active

- If the file was exported through editing software

This is one reason official investigations place such importance on source material. For UFO investigations, useful metadata can include:
- Device make and model
- Recording date and time

Those details help investigators test claims against environmental and astronomical data. A timestamp allows comparison with aircraft transponder records, satellite passes, meteor activity, rocket launches and weather conditions. How camera settings change what people think they saw
Many famous-looking UFO clips rely on ordinary imaging effects that appear extraordinary to non-specialists.
A smartphone recording a bright point at night may automatically:
- Increase exposure time
- Raise ISO sensitivity
- Apply noise reduction
- Sharpen edges
- Stabilise movement
- Switch lenses during zoom
- Use computational enhancement
These processes can distort apparent shape and motion. A distant aircraft light may become a pulsing orb. Venus may appear to shimmer, morph or “rotate” because atmospheric turbulence interacts with phone processing. Digital zoom can exaggerate hand movement so dramatically that a stationary light appears to dart across the sky.
Metadata helps investigators reconstruct those conditions rather than relying entirely on witness interpretation.
For example, if metadata shows:

That does not automatically debunk the sighting. It simply narrows what the media can genuinely support.
Compression and edit traces

Sometimes edits are innocent attempts to “make the UFO clearer”. Ironically, those enhancements can destroy evidential value by introducing artificial detail.
Metadata is useful but not infallible

The gap between “unidentified” and “anomalous”
A video can remain unidentified simply because evidence quality is too weak for confident resolution. That is different from proving anomalous performance.
An unresolved clip may lack:
- Accurate timing
- Camera orientation
- Longer footage

However, AI can also create false confidence. An automated system may produce highly precise-looking outputs from weak inputs. If the original media lacks reliable metadata, the AI’s conclusions inherit that uncertainty.
For example:
- A guessed location may generate incorrect satellite matches.
- An inaccurate timestamp may falsely eliminate aircraft traffic.
- AI upscaling may invent apparent structure in a blurred light source.
- Frame interpolation may create artificial motion smoothness.
Responsible workflows therefore preserve uncertainty visibly inside the case file.
Instead of saying:
“The object accelerated instantly.”
a stronger evidence-led record might say:
“Rapid angular movement observed within the frame; distance and true velocity undetermined.”
That distinction keeps interpretation separate from observable evidence.
Practical signs that a media file deserves closer attention
Most UFO media online is too degraded for serious analysis. The strongest cases tend to share several characteristics:

None of these automatically invalidate a sighting. They simply reduce what can responsibly be claimed from the media itself.
