Introduction
The fastest way to improve UFO or UAP triage is often the least dramatic: check ordinary aircraft first. The New Jersey drone wave showed how quickly lights in the night sky can be interpreted as anomalous when basic aviation context is missing. Federal agencies eventually stated that many reports involved lawful aircraft, authorised drones, stars or planets rather than unknown technology. Federal Aviation Administration [Federal Bureau of Investigation]fbi.govjoint dhs fbi statement on reports of drones in new jerseyFederal Bureau of InvestigationJoint DHS/FBI Statement on Reports of Drones in New Jersey12 Dec 2024 — “We have no evidence at this time…
That does not mean every report was solved cleanly. Some sightings remained weakly documented, contradictory or unresolved. The practical lesson is narrower and more useful: aviation checks are the highest-value first filter in AI-assisted UFO investigation because they explain a large share of dramatic observations quickly, cheaply and with measurable evidence. A good workflow does not assume every light is a plane, but it also does not jump to anomaly claims before ruling out known air traffic patterns, landing approaches, helicopters, medical flights, drones and incomplete public tracking data.
Why Flight Checks Must Come First
In modern UFO triage, aviation is not a side check. It is the core baseline. Most populated regions already contain dense layers of legitimate air traffic: passenger jets, police helicopters, medevac flights, business aircraft, hobby drones, cargo routes and training circuits. At night, many of these can look highly unusual from the ground.
The New Jersey reports illustrated a classic investigative failure mode. Witnesses often described objects hovering silently, moving in formation or remaining stationary for long periods. Yet those same descriptions are also consistent with common aircraft viewing conditions. Federal investigators repeatedly warned that many reported “drones” were actually manned aircraft being misidentified. [Federal Bureau of Investigation]fbi.govjoint dhs fbi statement on reports of drones in new jerseyFederal Bureau of InvestigationJoint DHS/FBI Statement on Reports of Drones in New Jersey12 Dec 2024 — “We have no evidence at this time… [ABC News]abcnews.comMystery drones in New Jersey, New York: A timeline of…A DHS official says they're "confident that many of the reported drone sightings…
For AI-assisted investigation systems, this changes the order of operations. The workflow should begin with:
- Time and location normalisation.
- Nearby airport and flight corridor lookup.
- Flight-tracker correlation.
- Aircraft lighting-pattern analysis.
- Altitude and approach-path modelling.
- Only then: anomaly scoring.
That order matters because aviation explanations are both common and testable. An unexplained light becomes far less mysterious if a landing approach path crosses the witness line of sight at the same minute.
Head-On Aircraft and Hovering Illusions
One of the most important mechanisms in the New Jersey wave was the head-on aircraft illusion. Aircraft flying directly toward an observer can appear nearly motionless for several minutes because their lateral movement is minimal from that viewing angle. Bright landing lights intensify the effect, especially at night. FAA guidance notes that landing lights are designed to make aircraft highly visible over long distances. [Federal Aviation Administration]faa.govdhs fbi faa dod joint statement ongoing response reported drone sightingsFederal Aviation AdministrationDHS, FBI, FAA & DoD Joint Statement on Ongoing…17 Dec 2024 — FBI has received tips of more than 5,000 r…
To a witness without depth cues, the result can look uncanny:
- a “hovering drone”
- a stationary orb
- an object pacing traffic
- a silent hovering craft
Then, suddenly, the object appears to “move off” or “vanish” when the aircraft turns, banks or passes overhead.
This effect becomes even stronger near airports. Aircraft on approach maintain stable alignment for extended periods, often with intense forward-facing lights visible from many miles away. In heavily trafficked corridors, several unrelated aircraft may line up sequentially, creating the impression of coordinated formations.
Night-time perception adds more problems. Aviation safety literature documents multiple visual illusions affecting both pilots and ground observers, including autokinesis, parallax effects and false motion perception. [Skybrary]skybrary.aeroSkybraryNight Visual Approaches | SKYbrary Aviation SafetyNight visual approaches pose an increased risk of CFIT due to visual illusions… ASRS A distant bright object viewed against a dark sky can appear to drift [asrs.arc.nasa.gov]asrs.arc.nasa.gov246The parallax effect describes a type of visual illusion in which the position of an object in 3-dimensional space appears to change.Re…, pulse or change direction even when stationary.
This matters for UFO investigation because sincerity is not the same as accuracy. A witness may honestly report extraordinary movement while still observing a conventional aircraft under misleading visual conditions.
Why Bright Lights Look Closer Than They Are
Human depth perception performs poorly at night. A bright landing light viewed against darkness often appears larger and nearer than it really is. Without visible terrain, clouds or reference objects, observers can misjudge:
- distance
- altitude
- speed
- size
A commercial aircraft several miles away may be interpreted as a low-hovering object nearby. Helicopters create similar confusion because they can genuinely hold position relative to the ground, especially during police, medical or news operations.
During the New Jersey sightings, some reports described very large drones “hovering over neighbourhoods”. Others described lights following roads or pacing vehicles. Those impressions can emerge naturally when aircraft remain aligned with an observer’s movement for several minutes. [Wikipedia]Wikipedia2024 United States drone sightings2024 United States drone sightings
AI-assisted triage systems should therefore model observer geometry rather than relying only on witness language. A useful system asks:
- Was the sighting aligned with a runway approach corridor?
- Was the observer moving in a vehicle?
- Was the object near the horizon?
- Were landing lights facing the witness?
- Did the apparent motion change after a turn?
These questions often explain “hovering” without dismissing the witness.
What Public Flight Trackers Can Miss
Public flight trackers are extremely useful, but they are not complete representations of the sky. This is one reason some witnesses distrust debunking attempts. They check a flight app, see nothing nearby, then conclude the object must be anomalous.
The reality is more complicated.
Most public tracking platforms rely heavily on ADS-B, or Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast, where aircraft transmit position and identity information. [Flightradar24]flightradar24.comFlightradar24How Flightradar24 worksTracking data on Flightradar24 comes primarily from Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B… But coverage varies by altitude, equipment, geography and aircraft type.
Important gaps include:
- aircraft without full ADS-B capability
- Mode S-only aircraft [forum.flightradar24.com]forum.flightradar24.com222620 ads b aircraft now only reported as mlatflightradar24.comADS-B aircraft now only reported as MLAT?28 Nov 2023 — Any idea why an aircraft (SE-VPF) with ADSB-out, that before has…
- low-altitude flights below receiver coverage
- helicopters in patchy reception zones
- military or sensitive flights
- delayed or filtered public feeds
- MLAT estimation gaps
Many tracking systems supplement ADS-B using multilateration, usually shortened to MLAT. This estimates aircraft position from signal timing differences between receivers. Spire: Global Data and Analytics Multilateration But MLAT accuracy depends heavily on receiver density and geometry. Low-altitude aircraft may disappear intermittently or show unstable track [multilateration.info]multilateration.inforequires no additional avionics equipment, as it uses replies from Mode A, C and. S transponders, as well as military. IFF and ADS-B…R… s.
Some services also filter or limit aircraft identity data. Aviation tracking discussions have documented cases where aircraft appear with missing registration information, anonymised identifiers or inconsistent metadata. ADS-B Exchange connects the world's largest independent ADS-B rece… [Aviation]WikipediaSensory illusions in aviationSensory illusions in aviationPlanets or stars in the night sky often cause the illusion, having been mistaken for landing lights of on…
That means “not visible on FlightRadar” is not strong evidence of anomaly on its own.
A good UFO triage workflow should therefore distinguish between:
- no correlated aircraft found
- incomplete tracker coverage
- probable but unconfirmed aircraft match
- confirmed non-aircraft anomaly
Those are very different confidence levels.
Why AI Should Compare Multiple Aviation Sources
A common mistake in amateur UFO investigation is reliance on a single app screenshot. Better workflows compare several overlapping datasets.
For example:
- ADS-B Exchange may show aircraft absent from other services. [ADS-B Exchange]adsbexchange.comADS-B ExchangeADS-B ExchangeA global, independent flight data network. ADS-B Exchange connects the world's largest independent ADS-B rece…
- MLAT-derived tracks may appear intermittently.
- Airport arrival logs may reveal approach timing.
- LiveATC recordings can confirm traffic flow.
- NOTAMs and temporary flight restrictions may explain unusual activity.
- Helicopter operators and medevac routes may account for low hovering lights.
AI systems are useful here because they can automate correlation across time, altitude, direction and geography.
Suppose a witness reports:
- 21:14 local time
- western horizon
- stationary white light
- then rapid movement north
An automated system can immediately test:
- inbound traffic to nearby airports
- aircraft aligned toward the witness
- turn points in approach procedures
- helicopter operations
- drone authorisations
- nearby celestial objects
This does not “solve” every report. It simply moves the investigation from intuition toward measurable screening.
The New Jersey Lesson Was About Triage, Not Total Debunking
One reason the New Jersey wave became so polarised is that two bad arguments appeared at once.
One side treated every sighting as evidence of hidden technology or covert operations. The other side sometimes implied that every witness was merely confused.
Neither position matches the evidence well.
Federal agencies stated that many reports were ordinary aircraft, authorised drones or celestial objects. Federal Aviation Administration [Federal Bureau of Investigation]fbi.govjoint dhs fbi statement on reports of drones in new jerseyFederal Bureau of InvestigationJoint DHS/FBI Statement on Reports of Drones in New Jersey12 Dec 2024 — “We have no evidence at this time… But the same event also exposed genuine weaknesses in public airspace awareness. Large numbers of people were observing lights they could not confidently identify, while public tracking tools and official communication often lagged behind public speculation.
That gap matters. Uncertainty is not proof of anomaly, but it is also not identical to deliberate fabrication.
A mature UFO triage process therefore separates:
- solved aircraft cases
- probable aircraft cases
- likely drone activity [gottheimer.house.gov]gottheimer.house.govhouse.govRELEASE: Gottheimer Calls on FBI, DHS, FAA for an…10 Dec 2024 — US Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) announced new action to…
- insufficient-data reports
- unresolved observations
The unresolved category should exist, but it should come after aviation screening rather than before it.
How to Grade Unmatched Lights Honestly
An unmatched light is not automatically anomalous. It is simply unmatched.
That distinction is crucial because public UFO discussion often collapses several different situations into one category:
- “not identified immediately”
- “not visible on one app”
- “no explanation found yet”
- “physically impossible”
- “non-human”
Those are not equivalent claims.
A better grading system for AI-assisted investigation looks something like this:
GradeMeaningConfirmed aircraftStrong timing, route or lighting correlationProbable aircraftGood geometric or behavioural match but incomplete dataPossible aircraftAviation explanation plausible but weakly evidencedInsufficient dataToo little information for assessmentUnresolvedGood data but no convincing conventional matchAnomalousEvidence appears inconsistent with known explanations after multiple checks
Most public reports never reach the final category because the evidence quality is too weak. That is not dismissive; it is simply a consequence of night-time observation limits.
The New Jersey episode demonstrated that mass sighting waves generate enormous numbers of low-information reports. AI tools are valuable not because they magically identify aliens, but because they can rapidly downgrade weak aviation matches before speculation spreads.
Why This Matters for Future UFO Investigation
The deeper lesson from New Jersey is procedural. UFO investigation improves when investigators treat aviation checks as a mandatory first-pass filter rather than a sceptical afterthought.
That approach produces several benefits:
- fewer false anomaly claims
- clearer prioritisation of genuinely unusual cases
- better use of investigator time
- more transparent confidence scoring
- reduced contamination from social media amplification
It also protects credibility. A case file that documents airport traffic, ADS-B gaps, approach geometry and tracker limitations is far more persuasive than one that jumps directly from “light seen” to “unknown craft”.
AI-assisted UFO investigation works best when it behaves less like myth collection and more like incident analysis. Aircraft checks come first not because every sighting is mundane, but because the sky is already crowded with ordinary explanations that can look extraordinary under the right conditions.
